How WINZ vehicle hire works

Once you’ve sent your request, our team prepares a written quote covering the full rental cost and emails it to you, usually within one business day.

Take that quote to your Work and Income case manager for approval. Once it’s approved, let us know so we can book the vehicle for you — your booking isn’t held until you tell us.

Work and Income either pays us directly, or puts the money on your payment card for you to pay us with. Either way, you can collect the vehicle once payment has gone through. Bring your full driver licence with you, and your payment card if you’re using one.

What it costs

Your quote sets out every charge in full, so there are no surprises when you collect.

In addition to the rental cost, a refundable bond of $500 applies. This is credited back to Work and Income once the hire is completed and the vehicle is returned undamaged, on time, and with the agreed fuel level. A service charge of $40 applies to WINZ rentals.

Daily hire rates reduce the longer you keep the vehicle, so if your dates are flexible it’s worth telling us — we’ll quote the best rate available for the time you need.

Does Work and Income pay for truck hire?

Work and Income may help with the cost of hiring a vehicle for an essential move, depending on your circumstances. You’ll need a written quote to apply, which is what we provide. Whether the cost is approved is decided by your case manager, not by us.

How long does it take to get a quote?

What size vehicle do I need?

A one-bedroom flat usually fits in a 12m³ truck, a two to three-bedroom house in a 17m³ to 19m³. If you’re not sure, leave the vehicle field blank and tell us what you’re moving — we’ll work out the right size for you. A tail-lift option is available to help with loading and unloading of your heavier cargo.

Can I get a quote before I have Work and Income approval?

Yes. The quote comes first — you need it to apply. Send us your details and we’ll prepare the quote for you to take to your case manager.

Do I need a special licence to drive one of your trucks?

You need a current full New Zealand driver licence that has been held for at least 12 months, and it must legally allow you to drive the vehicle you’re hiring. You can drive up to 19m³ truck on a normal class 1 license.
